Let's Practice /l/

The phonetic sound /l/ is a voiced liquid alveolar.

voiced = vocal cords vibrate while making this sound

liquid alveolar = touch your tongue to the top of your mouth but NOT the sides of your upper teeth - use vocal cords to make sound over the sides of your tongue.

 

Listen and repeat words with /l/

word initial /l/ sounds like: leave, let, later, light, look, little

middle /l/ sounds like: really, along, collect, below, follow, family

final /l/ sounds like: while, still, all, oil, tell, school

/l/ in consonant clusters: girl, close, play, help, old, only

 

Spelling Tips:

l: lift, like, lemon

ll: small, spelling, follow

The letter l is sometimes silent in words like: walk, talk, could, yolk, half
