Let's Practice /t/

The phonetic sound /t/ is an UNvoiced alveolar.

unvoiced = vocal cords do not vibrate while making this sound

alveolar= touch your tongue to the roof of your mouth, just behind the teeth - push air from your mouth and you drop your tongue

 

 

Listen and repeat words with /t/

word initial /t/ sounds like: take, talk, time, tell, toy, towel

middle /t/ sounds like: return, detail, potato, guitar, rotate, partake

final /t/ sounds like: it, not, but, about, write, get

/t/ in consonant clusters: after, first, its, want, try, study

 

Spelling Tips:

t: took, tape, hat

tt: attend, letter*, little*

The letter t is sometimes silent in words like: listen, often, ballet

*in spoken NEA, the spelling tt often sounds more like /d/ than /t/ as is the case of letter and little
